Howe Park Shooting Leaves 4 Shot in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade
Sacramento authorities are probing a gunfire incident that took place Saturday evening at Howe Community Park at the moment law enforcement were breaking up a large unsanctioned party of hundreds of attendees.
Prior to the Shooting
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office initially responded to Howe Park around half past six in the evening after receiving reports of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. After that, another report was received concerning a possible fight happening inside the park.
An overhead unit flew over the park but came back with no confirmation of a fight. However, it was apparent that a crowd of several hundred had packed into the park in an unauthorized manner.
When the Shots Rang Out
Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by surrounding the park and issuing commands over loudspeakers commanding attendees to clear out. Nearly 15 minutes were given for the crowd to leave.
At the height of the dispersal effort that an estimated 20 to 25 shots cut through the air. The sudden gunfire caused mass panic. Responding personnel immediately began searching for victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
When the dust settled, four gunshot victims were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — a group of one female and three male victims each reported to be in their mid to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to area medical facilities. Medical personnel stated that two had critical injury classifications, one sustained moderate wounds, and one had injuries classified as minor. Metro Fire Sacramento assisted at the location and assisted with medical triage those who had been shot at the scene.
Crime Scene Evidence
The main crime scene was believed to have taken place on Cottage Way next to the Home Depot situated at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Investigators recovered additional shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Ballistic damage were noted in the metal fencing surrounding the Home Depot. This ballistic evidence confirmed that at least one of the shooters had been sending rounds south from along Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot building and parking lot. The store itself was put under lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Crime scene personnel remained on scene for hours.
Suspect Vehicle Located
Intelligence received over scanner radio traffic confirmed that a Kia vehicle was intercepted in an area within Solano County. Four suspects were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento law enforcement were sent to retrieve the detainees to pick up those detained for further questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators established that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
